Create Your Own Mini Retreat: The Restorative Power of Time in Nature

There is something about being on an island that changes us.

Perhaps it is the rhythm of the tides, the sound of the wind, or the simple invitation to look up at the sky instead of down at a screen. Whatever it is, nature has a remarkable way of helping us remember ourselves.

This September, I will be leading a Women’s Island Retreat with Ocean Explorers Maine on a remote island off the coast of Maine. Over three days, we will explore women’s health, journaling, nourishing food, movement, adventure, and the restorative power of time spent outdoors.

But the spirit of retreat does not require three days away.

Sometimes, it begins with ten quiet minutes. A walk without your phone. A meal outside. A few deep breaths beside the water, beneath the trees, or under the open sky.

This week, consider giving yourself your own mini retreat.

  • Take a walk without your phone.

  • Watch the sunrise or sunset.

  • Eat one meal outside.

  • Sit quietly with a journal for ten minutes.

  • Let yourself notice the wind, the trees, the birds, or the sound of water.

Health is not built only through supplements, lab work, or exercise plans. Those tools can be important, but they are not the whole story.

Health is also cultivated through awe, stillness, connection, and time spent in the natural world. These experiences help regulate the nervous system, broaden our perspective, and remind us that we are part of something much larger than ourselves.

In a culture that asks us to move quickly, produce constantly, and stay connected at all hours, stepping outside can become a quiet act of restoration. It gives the body a chance to soften. It gives the mind a chance to settle. It gives the heart a little more room.

If spending a weekend immersed in that kind of experience sounds nourishing, I would love to have you join us this September for the Women’s Island Retreat. We will camp on a private Maine island, share meaningful conversations, learn practical skills, enjoy fresh meals, and reconnect with ourselves in the company of other women.

Whether your retreat is ten minutes in your backyard or three days on an island, my hope is the same: that you find a little more space to breathe, to notice, and to come home to yourself.
