This Just In: It’s Not Just a Phage

Within the gut microbiome is the viome, the community of viruses that live in and on us.  COVID-19 has given viruses a particularly bad wrap, but there are viruses that fight bacteria in ways that antibiotics are not able.  Bacteria-fighting viruses are called bacteriophages, aka ‘phages.’

Phage treatment was known and used long before the development of antibiotics.  It is re-gaining popularity with the explosion of research about the microbiome and the increase in development of antibiotic-resistant diseases.
