GLP-1 Medications Explained: A Functional Medicine Perspective
An ongoing conversation about what they’re helping, what’s missing, and what truly supports long-term health
GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Wegovy are everywhere right now.
Patients are asking about them. Articles are being published almost daily. And many people are wondering the same thing:
Are GLP-1 medications safe? And what are they actually doing in the body?
This is an evolving conversation—and one I’m continuing here as I share videos, reflections, and what I’m seeing in the clinic.
What Are GLP-1 Medications Really Showing Us?
In a recent video, I reflected on articles from The New York Times and The New Yorker discussing the rapid rise of GLP-1 medications.
These medications—often referred to as GLP-1 weight loss drugs—are being adopted faster than research and regulation can fully keep up. Naturally, this raises important questions about GLP-1 side effects, safety, and long-term use.
But what I find most interesting is something deeper.
Many people taking GLP-1 medications are experiencing improvements beyond weight loss:
Better metabolic health
Reduced inflammation
Improved cognition
Lower cardiovascular risk
That’s not accidental.
It points to something functional medicine has long emphasized: many chronic diseases share common root causes.
When we support underlying systems—blood sugar regulation, gut health, inflammation pathways—we don’t just impact one condition. We impact many.
🎥 Video #1: What GLP-1 Drugs Are Revealing About Chronic Disease
In this video, I explore how GLP-1 medications are highlighting the interconnected nature of chronic disease—and why this aligns with a root-cause, systems-based approach to health.
GLP-1s Are Not Just About Weight Loss—But They’re Not a Shortcut
It’s easy to categorize GLP-1 medications as “weight loss drugs,” but that’s an oversimplification.
These medications can influence:
Blood sugar regulation
Lipid levels
Blood pressure
Inflammation
All of which contribute to long-term health outcomes.
But here’s the part that often gets missed:
GLP-1 medications work best when they are layered onto an already supportive foundation.
That means:
Eating in a way that supports metabolic health
Prioritizing protein, fiber, and whole foods
Moving the body regularly
Supporting hormone balance
Addressing gut health
Without that foundation, results are often limited—and side effects may be more pronounced.
I’m also seeing a concerning trend: many GLP-1 medications are being prescribed quickly, often online, without individualized guidance around nutrition, dosing, or long-term support.
There is a way to use these medications thoughtfully. But it requires context.
🎥 Video #2: GLP-1s Aren’t Just About Weight Loss—But They’re Not a Shortcut Either
In this video, I talk about the broader benefits of GLP-1 medications—and why they should be used as part of a comprehensive, personalized approach to health.
Where GLP-1 Medications Fit (and Where They Don’t)
In functional medicine, we think in layers.
GLP-1 medications are not the foundation—they are a layer.
The foundation is always:
Nervous system regulation
Hormone balance
Gut microbiome health
Nutrition and movement
Sustainable lifestyle patterns
If those pieces are in place—and someone is still struggling with weight, metabolic dysfunction, or inflammation—GLP-1 medications may be a helpful tool.
But they are not a magic bullet.
And they are not one-size-fits-all.
🎥 Video #3: The Part of the GLP-1 Conversation People Miss
In this video, I walk through how to think about GLP-1 medications within the context of your overall health—and why the foundation always matters most.
A Functional Medicine Perspective on GLP-1 Medications
From a functional medicine perspective, the question isn’t:
“Should I take a GLP-1 medication?”
It’s:
What are the root causes of what I’m experiencing?
What systems need support?
Have I built a foundation that allows any intervention to work effectively?
GLP-1 medications can be powerful tools.
But long-term health—true, sustainable health—is built through the daily practices that support your body’s ability to regulate, repair, and adapt.
That’s where the real work is.
